“You’re far too late,” they said.
“Nothing will grow,” they said.
“A waste of money,” they said.
And still, in May, we felt the urge to sow green manure seeds.
It was late — very late — but it felt right.
Then came the unexpected rains.
Late May.
June.
And a massive hailstorm in early July.
And now?
There are sunflowers.
Grain sprouts.
Maize.
Alfalfa.
Vetch.
Slowly turning the brown into green.
They are not perfect.
They are small.
But their roots are working —
Opening the soil,
Lifting nutrients from the deep,
Laying the foundation for a fertile future.
