The area where we wanted to create the natural vegetable garden was quite steep, so we decided to build terraces and swales.
First, we used the A-frame to mark the contour lines. An A-frame is a wooden tool, you can easily make yourself, to measure areas with the same hight. You do this by measuring and placing wooden sticks in the ground. After doing this, you can easily mark the line. As there are almond trees in between, we needed to take both the measurements of the terraces and the place of the existing trees into account.
The second step was digging the swales by hand, in a very rocky soil. This has been so much work, but it was the first step to build the terraces for the natural farming vegetable garden.
