Awakening the soil on a dry piece of land. Starting up a Natural Farm with sowing green manure. Our climate has very cold winter nights with temperatures below -15 degrees Celcius and very hot summers. It is very dry with 2 moments of rain in autumn and spring. This is why we sow 2 times a year. One time in autumn (September/October) before the rain and one time in spring (March/April) before the rain. If you are in a mild climate you can sow everything in autumn. When people collaborate, magic things happen. With some of our neighbors, we made seed balls to awaken the depleted soils in our area. The city hall allowed us to use the cement mixer, and although not perfect, it did work! Normally you take out the blades, so it even works more efficiently, but the mixer was big enough so the balls had enough space to form. Two days of hard work, good company, excellent food and the joy of being together amongst friends. Seeing the result of this collaboration is so exciting! Imagine what we can do if we would collaborate more. All the seed balls will be sowed this autumn. They contain a mixture of different grains, alfalfa, grasses and clovers. Natural farming - A new community cement mixer thanks to you! On our support page, we mentioned that we wanted to invest in our own community cement mixer to make seed balls. We would share the cost with our neighbors. With your support, we were able to purchase a cement mixer last week and are already using it to make the first seed balls for this spring. We will use this machine to re-green and improve the soil of (currently) 3500 m2 of our own land, 200 m2 of Natural Farming vegetable garden down the road and 600 m2 of Natural Farming vegetable garden in the valley. Our neighbors will use it to make their seed balls to re-green their plots as well! Thank you so much! This 600m2 plot of land is being prepared to transform into a natural farming vegetable garden. On this plot, there is water available, which makes it a lot easier during the hot summer months. We are very excited to create more biodiversity! First we spread the manure. Then the soil was opened, which had been compacted by the many tractor passes in the past. Now this land will never have to be plowed again. We came up with a creative circle design and used reeds to mark it. Unfortunately, the strong winds blew the reeds away, so we put some manure on top to see the difference between the paths and the growing beds. The next step is to lay down straw and sow clay balls with green manure seeds. Stay tuned to see the progress. This is the first year we grow our own herbs. Of course, we used real organic seeds, so we can harvest the seeds from these plants for the future. Planting potatoes We have been planting potatoes in different ways. Some potatoes have been cut, this is how they do it here, to get more harvest. Others, we just planted in their natural form, which felt much better. So interesting to feel the difference between the manipulated and natural way in our bodies. In one spot we planted them 5 cm under the soil and covered them with straw to keep the soil moist. In another one, inspired by Ruth Stout, we simply laid them down and covered them with a thick layer of straw. In this area, instead of seed potatoes, we used the red potatoes we bought from the locals last year that had grown a lot of roots over winter. Last winter, we covered up a lot of natural fruit trees seeds we received as a gift from Natural Farm Shizen in Italy in a bucket with sand. Over winter, these seeds can adapt to the local climate and in spring, they will form roots. The sands helps with the root formation, but keeps the stem from sprouting.
